Eighteenth Amendment is adopted in Washington, D.C.

December 18, 1917

Congress approves the amendment, which prohibits “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors. Congress overrides the veto of President Woodrow Wilson to enact the National Prohibition Act, better known as Volstead Act, which provides for the enforcement the amendment, on October 28, 1919. It is ratified on January 16, 1919, and goes into effect in 1920.*
